The way we were Photographs from the Country Life archive

The watermill at Mapledurham, Oxfordshire. This picturesque scene is carefully animated with posed figures; neither the man in the foreground, nor the boy by the mill disturb the surface of the water with the sticks they hold. Curiously, a similar photograph with a cart in the river was published in the magazine on September 10, 1898.
Every week for the past 125 years, COUNTRY LIFE has documented and photographed many walks of life in Britain. More than 80,000 of the images are available for syndication or purchase in digital format. To view the archives, visit www. countrylifeimages.co.uk
