What a pickle
• Last year, 20 million jars of Branston Pickle rolled off the production line
• The vegetables are simmered for 2½ hours in large vats, together with the ‘secret Branston sauce’
• Ninety-five per cent of all Branston Pickle is sold in Britain
• The biggest seller is the ‘Small Chunk’ variety, launched in 1988. The chunks are 3mm (0.1in) wide, compared with 10mm (0.4in) for the ‘Original’ variety
• The biggest export market is the US, thanks to the British expat population
• In 1972, Branston ran television adverts with the slogan ‘Bring out the Branston’— a legend still printed on its jars to this day
