Apple-peel finish
Domaine Lasserre, Jurançon, South-west France 2018. £7/37.5cl, Co-op, alc 12% Candied orange, apricot and boiled peach on the nose. Not overly powerful or sweet, with pure yellow fruits and citrus acidity on the palate. Yellow apple peel on the finish. An approachable pudding wine made with Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng.
Ripe peachy notes
Sainsbury’s, Taste the Difference Douro White, Douro, Portugal 2020. £10, Sainsbury’s, alc 13.5% Made for Sainsbury’s by top Douro producer Symington, this characterful white is a field blend of Portuguese varieties. Herbal, floral and citrus notes dance across the nose and palate, ripe peachy notes balanced by fresh acidity and a clean mineral streak.
Smoked prunes and eucalyptus
Ktima Pavlidi, Emphasis Agiorgitiko, Drama, Macedonia, Greece 2016. £19.44, The Greek Deli, alc 14.5% Smoked prunes, eucalyptus and black-cherry aromas. Soft and juicy palate with velvety tannins. Plenty of red and dark plum, black olives and tobacco, with dried goji berries indicating optimal ripeness. Slightly warming alcohol balanced by acidity and ripe fruits.
A hint of toast
Westwell, Blanc de Blancs Brut, Kent, England 2013. £48, Westwell Wines, alc 12%
Still fresh and mineral, with lime, sour orange and citrus blossom on the nose, together with a hint of toast. Clean palate with lime juice and a savoury edge. The piercing acidity is wrapped up by brioche roundness, thanks to extended lees ageing.
