The gay community and the country house
IREAD with delight the article on The Crooked House in Lavenham, Suffolk (April 27), the beautiful home of Alex and Oli Khalil-martin. Not only did I enjoy it for the splendid writing and fascinating history, but also because, so often, the contribution of same-sex couples to the countryside is not represented in the media. There is much talk these days of inclusion and diversity and it was wonderful to see COUNTRY LIFE quietly leading the way, as always. I am currently reading for a masters in Country House Studies and my thesis will be on the gay community and the country house, these stories being largely untold. My Instagram account, @gayaristo, can hopefully begin to put that right.
