Yorkshire heroes
YOUR article on Sir Len Hutton’s 364 vs Australia at The Oval in 1938 (Masterpiece, April 27) made for delightful reading. I wonder if I may add that the wicketkeeper, Arthur Wood, yet another Yorkshireman, contributed a quick and spirited 53 after the heroics of Hutton and Maurice Leyland, posting an unassailable score against the old enemy. The crowd was appreciative of Wood’s entertainment and, as he returned to the pavilion, he was heard to say to an England fan: ‘You can always rely on me in a crisis.’ Richard Tarran, North Yorkshire
