In with the new

-

OLD meets new at Castle Howard. The major North Yorkshire country house is hosting its first-ever contemporary sculpture exhibition this summer, with works by Sir Anthony Cragg. The sculptures—which include Sir Anthony’s famous Over The Earth—will stand both indoors and in the gardens, including within the magnificent Temple of the Four Winds.

Calling the exhibition ‘long overdue,’ Nicholas Howard explains that: ‘Castle Howard is filled with conversations, between materials and forms, the natural and the built, the old and the new. It is time for a new voice to enter that conversation, and I could not be happier that it is Tony Cragg whose voice it will be.’

Mr Howard was especially inspired when visiting the artist in his studio in Wuppertal, Germany, and, together, they travelled to the nearby

Waldfrieden Sculpture Park, which is set on a forested hillside. ‘What I saw in Waldfrieden convinced me that, however otherworldly some of the works might seem, they would integrate with the landscape here. There is an organic quality to them, a celebration of form and texture that seems to converse with the natural world.’

‘Tony Cragg at Castle Howard’ runs until September 22 (www. castlehoward.co.uk).
