Two 1.8cm-thick pine shelves – 115cm x 20cm and 85cm x 20cm (these will be used to make the shelf and brackets) Saw and jigsaw Electric drill/screwdriver Three pieces of 1.5cm x 4.5cm wooden baton – one piece cut to 115cm in length (for the hanging rail) and two pieces cut to 39cm in length (for the wall brackets) Medium-grade sandpaper 4cm-long size 4 screws G-clamp Screw-in hooks or small knobs Acrylic primer or Simply Shellac by Grand Illusions Hurricane and Sel de Mer Vintage Paint by Grand Illusions Simply Varnish by Grand Illusions Wet wipes

1 Saw off two 30cm pieces from the smaller shelf (85cm x 20cm), one from each end. 2 Download and print out the bracket template from grandillusions.co.uk/ vintage-paint/template. Draw around the template on both pieces of wood, before cutting out with a jigsaw. 3 Drill pilot holes along the surface of the longest piece of baton (115cm in length), 20cm in from each end. On both of the shorter batons (39cm in length), drill pilot holes along the face at intervals of 4cm, 20cm and 33cm from one end. 4 On the larger shelf, use the jigsaw to round and sand the four corners smooth. Sand the edges of all the pieces to create a worn effect. 5 To assemble the shelf, fix the long baton to the shelf brackets with the screws. Secure the upright batons to the brackets with the G-clamp, then fix the top shelf to the brackets by drilling a pilot hole and screwing in place. 6 Attach the hooks where required. 7 Prime the shelf with acrylic primer or two coats of Simply Shellac, leaving to dry between each coat. Once dry, cover with a coat of paint in a dark shade (we used Hurricane) and, once dry, seal with a coat of Simply Varnish. Leave to dry. 8 Cover with one even coat of a lighter shade of paint (we used Sel de Mer) so that none of the colour underneath shows through. 9 When thoroughly dry, gently distress the paint with sandpaper and wet wipes – concentrating on areas where wear and tear would naturally occur. 10 Once dry, finish with one or two coats of Simply Varnish.
