A simple make... CHRISTMAS STOCKING

Finish this homemade design with personalised embroidery

- PROJECT AND STYLING ROS BADGER PHOTOGRAPH BY RACHEL WHITING

Make a card template of a simple boot shape, measuring approximately 50cm long (from top to toe) and 26cm wide. Place the template on to your chosen fabric – an old blanket works well – and cut out two boots, making patterns match up on the front and back. Using four-ply wool, or six strands of embroidery thread, and a large sewing needle, sew a pattern on to one boot only (see the picture for simple bird design in running stitch). Sew a name or festive word in chain stitch at the top of the same boot. With the inner sides of each boot facing, pin the two halves together and blanket stitch around the edges. Leave the boot tops open and blanket stitch along each edge (unless you’ve been able to use the edge of the original blanket here). Cut a piece of 2cm-wide ribbon approximately 30cm long and stitch to one corner. Use cross stitch for a pretty finish. Place an orange and a few chocolate coins in the toe, then fill with presents.
