As long as no frost is forecast, early March is the best time for farm­ers to be­gin drilling su­crose-rich sugar beet. More than 3,500 Bri­tish farm­ers grow the crop (which re­sem­bles a big turnip when fully grown) and to­gether they meet 60 per cent of the UK de­mand for sugar.
