Putting down roots
Plants grown in containers rely on us for sustenance and while standard multi-purpose compost will do for some things, its quality varies hugely. A poor mix yields disappointing results, so it’s worth considering what you’re putting your plants’ roots into. I can recommend Sylvagrow, a peat-free, allpurpose compost made up of wood fibre, bark waste and coir, with none of the inconsistencies of green waste. My plants thrive in it and its open structure helps it retain moisture. From £10.75 for 50 litres; see melcourt.co.uk for stockists.
