NATURE’S MEDICINE CABINET

Apricots If you’re lucky enough to have an apricot tree in your garden, you’ll know the true delight of tasting the delicate, perfectly ripe fruit, which come into their short season around now. The sweet flesh is rich in betacarotene, which studies show can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, as well as vitamin C, E and zinc. High levels of vitamin A in apricots also help to promote healthy skin, and a face mask made from the flesh or kernel oil is thought to aid in soothing a troubled complexion. Also edible and rich in vitamin A, C and E, the oil is perfect for drizzling over summer salads. Dried apricots retain many of the nutrients – opt for those without sulphur (which are browner in colour) for a better taste.*
