A simple make... NORDIC-STYLE LANTERNS

Paper bands with simple cut-out patterns make pretty covers for jars

-

1 Measure and cut bands of lightweight textured paper, such as sugar paper, to size for each jar, ensuring there is a gap between the ends when they meet around the glass. 2 With the strip of paper flat, cut into the long edges to create a frayed-edge effect and cut out simple shapes from the body of the paper, making sure the design is made up of small sections rather than large gaps. Smaller gaps will diffuse the light in an attractive way. Do this with scissors or on a cutting mat carefully with a scalpel. 3 Use a single punch to create holes, three in the same place on both of the short side edges. Repeat to make as many as you need for all your jars. 4 Wrap the paper around the jar and thread a piece of string through the holes, crossing it over as you go, to secure the paper in place. Finish with a knot or bow. 5 Pour a little sand or rock salt into the jar. This will help to keep the candle in place. Tealights or short pillar candles work well. Light using a long match*.
