Let’s dance

Whether it’s ballroom, jive or even Zumba, joining a dance class is a (quick) step in the right direction for your health. As well as an aerobic workout to get your heart pumping, studies show that high-impact exercise helps strengthen muscles, joints and maintain bone density – particular­ly important for women after the menopause. Dancing provides a mental boost, too. One study found that while all exercise helped to slow age-related decline to the brain, dancing had the most profound effect, which scientists attributed to the process of learning new steps and routines. Research also found that people who took part in a group exercise class at least once a week lowered stress levels by 26 per cent. Time to get your dancing shoes on…
