SLEEP SORTERS
The change in the clocks always knocks my sleep pattern off kilter for a few days. But while the effect of one night’s disturbed sleep is nothing more than feeling a bit tired and grumpy, several nights can impact your decision-making and increase your risk of having an accident. Long periods of disrupted sleep could even increase the likelihood of heart disease and diabetes, and reduce immunity. A regular routine is key to a good night’s sleep, so factor in time for winding down. That could be a warm bath, a book or the radio (The Archers for me). I also find it helps to spray a soporific lavender fragrance in the room – I like Aurelia Perfect Sleep Pillow Mist (£24; aureliaskincare.com) and This Works Sleep Together Calming Spray (£22; thisworks.com).
Look out for blood oranges, which are in season now. Their deep-red segments are packed with more polyphenols and five times the antioxidant activity of regular navel oranges, and may help to reduce inflammation.
