WORCESTERSHIRE

THE LYGON ARMS Broadway is one of the most handsome stone villages in the Cotswolds and it’s here that you’ll find the charming Lygon Arms, an ancient coaching inn. There has been a hotel here since medieval times, although most of what you see today – including the vaulted Great Hall – dates from the 17th century, when guests included Charles I and Oliver Cromwell (both their suites still survive). The hotel has 86 rooms, spread between the main building, the courtyard and nearby cottages. All have period flourishes and paintings, and many are dog friendly, with canine beds and treats thrown in for good measure. Dogs are also allowed in the garden and most public areas, while the hotel can arrange dog-grooming sessions during your stay, too. Double rooms from £195 per night; dogs £25 per night (lygonarmshotel.co.uk).
