Born in Hampstead, north London.
1971
Moves to Gloucestershire, where the family plot gives him his first taste of ‘grow your own’.
1984
Reads philosophy and psychology at St Peter’s College, Oxford.
1989
Becomes a sous chef at The River Café, London.
1989
Leaves The River Café to pursue freelance journalism.
1995
Makes his inaugural TV appearance in A Cook on the Wild Side (top left).
1999
Escape to River Cottage
– tracking Hugh’s ambition to become self-sufficient – airs on Channel 4 (second from top).
2001
Publishes The River Cottage Cookbook.
2004
River Cottage HQ (middle left), teaching everything from beekeeping to breadmaking, opens in Dorset, relocating to Devon two years later.
2008-2018
A series of campaigning documentaries include Hugh’s Fat Fight and Hugh’s Fish Fight (above left), for which he wins a BAFTA.
2020
Publishes his latest book – Eat Better Forever (left).
