The drey DREAMER

-

Far from bright eyed and bushy tailed, red squirrels

(Sciurus vulgaris) are born blind and hairless. Twice a year – in spring and summertime – females have litters of between three and six kittens, giving birth to them in treetop dreys lined with leaves and moss. If spooked, the mother relocates her offspring to another nest, moving them one by one in her mouth. She has to protect them in this way for over a month before they start venturing from the nest at seven weeks old.
