THE BALM OF TRUE BLISS
It can sometimes be hard to maintain a sunny outlook (especially following the challenges of the past year), but a growing body of research points to the health benefits of optimism. A recent study found that people who feel cheerful and enthusiastic – psychologists call it the ‘positive effect’ – are less prone to memory decline as they get older. In another, researchers found that optimists were less likely to require a return to hospital after a heart operation. The reasons are still unknown – it could be that cheerful people make healthier choices or have lower levels of stress hormones – but I for one will be looking on the bright side from now on.
