6 OF THE BEST... berries to grow
1 WORCESTERBERRIES A fruit that tastes and looks like a mix between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant. Makes a large bush, superb for growing as cordons. Reliable, heavy cropping and perfect for pies.
2 KIWIBERRIES These large, hardy berries, which grow on a vine, taste like kiwis but are a fraction of the size and, not being furry, can be eaten whole.
3 HONEYBERRIES Often mistaken for elongated blueberries, honeyberries are just as delicious. Native to Siberia, they’re unbelievably hardy (down to -40°C) and can cope with most soil types.
4 JOSTABERRIES A cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant, the jostaberry can’t be machine-picked and so you’ll never find these special berries in a supermarket. It forms a vigorous but spineless shrub and is self-fertile. Delicious cooked but can also be eaten raw.
5 TAYBERRIES A raspberry and blackberry mash-up, the tayberry is larger than a normal raspberry and sweeter. Can cope with very cold winters and most soils.
6 WHINBERRIES Also known as bilberries and whortleberries (and windberries and myrtle berries), these slow-growing bushes won’t take up much space (and will grow in containers) but need ericaceous soil (with an acid ph).
