Rockpool scavengers

-

Look out for this little trio between seaweed fronds and sea snails

SHORE CRAB This species, found throughout the UK, can be orange, red or greenish, and has five upturned spikes on each side of its carapace. HERMIT CRAB It might not be a real crab (it doesn’t have a completely hard exoskeleton), but this invertebrate is certainly a scavenger. Find it peering out of empty periwinkle and whelk shells. VELVET SWIMMING CRAB Beware the beady eyes and sizable claws of this cantankerous crustacean as it scuttles at speed in pursuit of prey.
