…peatlands can benefit the environment more than trees? Trees only store carbon while they’re alive, but peatlands can store it for thousands of years. Forestry England is currently restoring Border Mires in Northumberland, which were one of the UK’S most important peatlands before they were drained to make way for spruce trees after the Second World War. Wetland plants such as sphagnum moss, bog asphodel and sundews may also grow there.
