A note from the editor
A few weeks ago, I came across a heartwarming quote from Luther Burbank, a pioneering American botanist. He said: “Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.” I couldn’t agree more.
Putting together this issue, I have particularly enjoyed the abundance of stories celebrating the pure joy that flowers bring to our lives. On page 130, Sandy Coppen’s bountiful potager shows just how beautifully flowers and vegetables can sit side by side. As a keen vegetable gardener, I’ve always struggled with the notion of giving precious growing space to flowers. But this feature, together with our interview with cut-flower grower Tammy Hall (page 80, below left), has convinced me to give it a try. Next year, I intend to plant a few dahlias alongside my carrots and kale, so I’ll have something to fill my vases as well as my fridge. Whatever the outcome, there’s no doubt that the feel of soil between my fingers, and the sense of nurturing new life, will make me smile!
Another of our favourite summer activities at CL is alfresco swimming. A number of the team are keen sea and river swimmers, which is why our campaigning piece this month (page 88, below right) focuses on the intrepid pioneers leading the charge to protect our waterways. There’s plenty of advice on how we can do our bit to help. We hope you’ll be inspired to support this and all the gentle country pleasures that certainly do bring joy to our lives!
