LOCAL ECO-HEROES

A community in southern Scotland is creating the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve for some of Britain’s most endangered birds. The Langholm Initiative has bought 5,400 acres of land for £3.8m, raised through crowdfunding and support from organisations including The Woodland Trust. The land is already a haven for hen harriers, merlins and short-eared owls, and there are now plans to restore peatland and ancient woodland. langholminitiative.org.uk
