A potted GUIDE
GOATS
SAANEN
Calm-natured Saanens are the country’s most popular breed for milk. British Alpines, Anglo Nubians, Guernseys and Toggenburgs are also well known. The Nubians’ milk, high in butterfat, is good for cheese.
ANGORA
A breed renowned for its fine, lustrous mohair. The Angora goat produces a soft-to-touch fibre that dyes well and can be spun into clothing and home textiles (angoragoats-mohair.org.uk).
BOER
Originating in South Africa, the Boer is a specialist, fast-maturing meat-goat breed. Large and hardy, but docile by nature, Boers are good dual-purpose milk/meat animals (britishboergoatsociety.co.uk).
