Paint EFFECTS

-

Paint is the most flexible decorating tool. It is easy to apply and patch up, and relatively inexpensive and accessible. It is also versatile, as you can experiment with finishes and effects.

1 ALL OF A PIECE Use one colour on walls and woodwork, such as with this Porphyry Pink by Farrow & Ball, to make a room appear more streamlined and expansive.

2 HALF AND HALF A wall painted in two shades, with the stronger colour used above, wraps around built-in furniture for a whimsical result.

3 BANDS OF TONE Breaking up a wall using different colours below and above the dado rail is effective in high-ceilinged, elegant period rooms. These colours are from Francesca’s Paints. 4 ALL SQUARE A chequerboard of jaunty, handpainted squares has an appealing French look in this kitchen.

5 UNDER SCRUTINY Highlight areas of interest or focal points by painting contained sections such as a fire surround. This rich olive green reflects the hues seen in nature and pairs perfectly with wood and natural flooring.

?? ?? DEFINING LINES Painting horizontal bands of contrasting colour across a room will expand it on that plane. Conversely, vertical stripes will have the effect of raising a ceiling
