Country Living (UK)

A note from the editor

-

Welcome to our very special midsummer issue, the timing of which coincides with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In true Country Living style, we’re in celebratory mood and have a stellar cast of people and stories lined up to entertain you. We were delighted to persuade the legendary Dame Joanna Lumley (below right) – who has recently published a book about the Queen – to share a few entertaining tales of her royal encounters (page 34). And, as a further Jubilee tribute, we couldn’t resist dedicating the fourth “chapter” of our ongoing dogbreed series to Her Majesty’s favourite: the corgi. I’ve never considered owning a small(ish) dog but, after reading about these gregarious little chaps, I have to say I’m smitten and have even warned Bernie, my loyal Labrador, that he might have to consider sharing my affection! If there’s a time to champion community, it’s right now and nothing conjures up the feeling of togetherness better than the great British street party. We loved looking back into the archives to bring you a nostalgic reminder of the Queen’s previous jubilees (page 82). I still fondly remember celebrating the Silver Jubilee as a child in my local village. So, for those planning to be with friends, family and neighbours this time around, we’ve come up with some easy ideas to help you put the finishing touches to your party (below left). Time to hang out the bunting!
