THE BUTTERFLIES are back
Good news for butterfly spotters: a species once extinct in England can now be seen fluttering around Northamptonshire. The chequered skipper disappeared in 1976 but has been reintroduced to Fineshade Wood in Rockingham Forest. Butterfly Conservation transported 50 adult insects from Belgium several years ago, but kept the location secret to allow them to settle in. Today, the group says populations are robust enough to receive visitors, but you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled: the yellow and brown butterflies are small and superfast. butterfly-conservation.org
