SEALYHAM
Blue-blooded owners of this rare breed – first introduced in the 1800s – have included King George V and Princess Margaret (alongside Agatha Christie and Cary Grant). Boisterous but affectionate, these medium-sized terriers are suited for both town and country.
WELSH HOUND
This ancient breed is a descendant of the now-extinct Celtic hound and old staghound. It might have a booming bark (a prerequisite for hunting in the windswept Welsh valleys), but its gentle, loyal and tolerant temperament makes it a perfect pet.
WELSH TERRIER
This wiry tan and black breed is reputably the oldest in the UK and was originally bred for keeping rodents, foxes and badgers at bay. Far less exuberant than other terriers, they’re ideal for families with children – plus they don’t moult, meaning less time spent vacuuming…
