ASK THE DOG EXPERT

With Julian Norton, from the Channel 5 series The Yorkshire Vet

-

Q I live in a small house with a tiny garden. Can I get a Border collie?

A Border collies need a lot of exercise to tire them out, as well as stimulus to engage their brain. But if you’re willing to spend time with your dog, the size of your house isn’t necessarily a problem. If they don’t have much space, take them out for two or three exercise sessions during the day, including a visit to a dog field where they can run about off the lead (find one at dogparksnearme.co.uk). Some have agility equipment, too.

Q How can I stop my collie barking when I’ve had enough of playing?

A I know this situation well. I have a Jack Russell, who is happy to play ball games all day long, even when she is obviously exhausted. Collies are especially energetic, so it is important that they can run about, but as long as you’re giving yours two hours of exercise a day, you can probably relax. Fit dogs can play games for hours, but you know when it is time to stop. If the barking continues, try distracting them by changing location or offering them a different toy.

Q I am just about to take an office job after working from home. Will my collie be okay?

A Leaving any dog alone for more than about four hours is not ideal, and collies especially. They like to be around people and have things to do. Your collie may suffer separation anxiety (when they become overly attached to one person) or isolation distress (when no one, human or canine, is around). They may bark a lot or destroy furniture. Find a local dog walker or doggy day care, or ask a neighbour to take them in. If your collie gets anxious after a short period, leave the radio on and give them plenty of puzzle toys.
