A note from the editor
For years before I joined Country Living, the December issue was always the one I’d most look forward to receiving in the post. Its arrival often coincided with a visit to the CL Christmas Fair in London, and both would signal the start of planning for the festive season – a marker in my diary to buy cards and gifts, and get ahead on the writing and wrapping front. When I began working here, I did wonder whether any of that would change – especially as we start thinking about our content in August. I’m pleased to say that, if anything, the experience has been enhanced! I love being part of a team who pull out all the stops to create a sparkling Christmas issue and I hope you will agree that this one is no exception.
We start with gifts, selecting some of the best handcrafted presents for even the most hard-to-buy-for friend or relative (page 17), and highlight the talented artisans who make the festivities extra special. Compton Marbling make stunning baubles and paper (page 78), while Honeysuckle & Hilda (below left) create the most exquisite natural wreaths (page 122). We’ve then added extra magic by featuring interviews with A-listers Hugh Bonneville (page 34) and Emma Thompson (page 48), before paying tribute to Raymond Briggs, who passed away this year. When my children were young,
The Snowman (below right) was the book that made Christmas for us – and his enchanting illustrations (page 117) remind us that the story will continue to delight generations to come.
However you’re spending the festive season, with a noisy gathering or a quiet few days at home, we hope that you get as much pleasure from these pages as we’ve had putting them together. Wishing you and your family a joyful and peaceful time.
