Q We know that people buy puppies on Instagram, but is that a good idea?
A Our research shows half of buyers are influenced by social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Social media can be a wonderful source of information and inspiration from people who love and care about their dogs. But it also provides an easy way for unscrupulous breeders to reach buyers who want puppies for the wrong reasons. During research for our Be Puppywise campaign, we found that one in four puppies had been bought because its new owner thought it was cute. A cute picture tells you very little about the puppy or its background. We found that one in four puppies bought through social media gets sick or passes away before its first birthday.
Q What’s the best way to find a caring, knowledgeable dog breeder?
A Make sure you see the puppy with its mum and siblings in a healthy home environment. Visit in person if you can. Ask for vaccination, insurance and microchip records, and research what health tests are needed. A good breeder will answer questions thoroughly. Expect to be asked questions in return about your lifestyle and home environment: it’s a sign that the breeder cares about the puppy’s wellbeing and wants to know it will have a happy life in a good home.
Q How do I know if I’m ready and have a suitable lifestyle to own a puppy responsibly?
A You should never buy a puppy on impulse. The decision to bring a dog into your life has long-term consequences that need careful consideration. Ask yourself some questions: how much space, time, exercise, mental stimulation, grooming and company will you be able to give the dog, not just now but for many years into the future? And can you afford its food, insurance and vet’s bills?
