Pedigree standards

Country Smallholding - - Feature The Deep End -

If your ambition lies in the production of pedigree animals, to be sold for breeding purposes, you need to be aware that, even if you start off with top quality foundation stock, not everything you produce will be of a suitably high standard. Any sub-standard animals must be sold for slaughter or killed for home consumption. To do otherwise would be detrimental to the long term future of the breed you claim to support. Unfortunately, some small-scale livestock breeders do sell sub-standard animals (either through ignorance, or through the misguided belief that it’s kinder than killing them) to people who wish to breed from them. In this situation the buyers are usually novices, who are then in the unfortunate position of trying to establish their own breeding program from a very poor starting point.
