Learning the art of shearing

Country Smallholding - - Donald’s diary -

As my sheep numbers have increased over the past five years, so has my shearing bill. I thought it was time to pull my finger out and learn how to shear. I have been able to use hand shears since an early age, but it is not really feasible to try and shear 300 animals by hand power alone, so I hosted a British Wool Marketing Board shearing course, attended by a couple of my friends, too. The beauty of hosting the course was that I got most of my hoggs shorn as part of it. I started off a bit sluggish on day one, but things just clicked for me after lunch on the second day and I have gone on to shear most of the rest of my flock myself. But my goodness, I never appreciated how hard it is on the hamstrings.

Two of my friends and I attended a British Wool Marketing Board shearing course earlier in the summer
