Fund-raising campaign launched to save rare working horses
THE RARE Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) has launched a fundraising campaign to raise £ 375,000 in an attempt to halt the decline of Britain’s rarest working horses. Just 240 Shire, 199 Clydesdale and 25 Suffolk pedigree foals were registered last year, compared to the 2.6 million heavy horses being used in agriculture and trade at the dawn of the 20th Century. Heavy horses still have a role to play today and are used by some smallholders on their land and for logging.
Jimmy Doherty, RBST president, said: “These working class heavy horse heroes need our help now so that they can survive and thrive in the future. That’s why we’ve launched a new social media campaign”
