Get water wise this winter

Country Smallholding - - Resilient Growing -

The months of soaring, Mediterranean-like temperatures may seem like a distant, almost unreal memory now the daylight hours are short and the rain plentiful, but let us not forget. With increasing extremes of weather the new norm, it is important to be prepared for almost anything.

Right now therefore, with water in such abundant supply, is the perfect time to think water collection.

Butts are inexpensive to buy and you may be surprised by how much can be collected in a very short space of time from the roofs of your home and outbuildings. I, for one, will be upping my collection efforts tenfold and investing in many more alongside a moveable water pump to enable me to easily distribute the water when I need it with minimum effort.

You will face less multiple watering cancarrying journeys back and forth, more attachment to the hose pipe or sprinkler system and away you flow. These pumps can further be used to distribute bath and paddling pool water in summer time, so they are a sensible investment.

There are also underground water collection systems that are worth considering if, like me, your private water supply ran almost entirely dry this summer.
