DANIEL ROBERTS worked in the poultry industry for 15 years and, with the support of a Nuffield Farming Scholarship, decided to investigate how the UK would fare should avian influenza (AI) hit once more. What he discovered and writes up in his report, Living and Dying with Avian Influenza (page 4), makes uncomfortable reading. “So far the UK has swiftly isolated and stamped out the small number of outbreaks... but it is not a case of ‘if’, but ‘when’ the big one arrives on our shores,” he comments. Daniel sees one of the biggest stumbling blocks as low awareness and biosecurity measures among hobby keepers, but he has some suggested solutions, including involving planning authorities in AI prevention. Bill Smith hit the headlines earlier this year when trialling the late, great speed demon Donald Campbell’s Bluebird K7 after a 15-year labour-of-love restoration. What is not so well known about Bluebird’s remarkable saviour is that he is also a chicken lover — and two new additions to his flock even made the trip to the Isle of Bute, along with Bluebird.
