The walk starts from parking area near Culnacraig (grid ref NC061041), seven miles by crow north west of Ullapool but 28 very scenic ones by the A835 and single track roads. Bus from Ullapool to Badenscallie, two miles from start (Mon to Sat).

WHERE TO STAY

One of the best hostels in Scotland is on the doorstep at

Acheninver (01854 622283, www. acheninverhostel.com). Housed in a couple of crofts looking out to sea, and reached by a burnside path, it used to be an SYHA and is now run as an independent by a local family. Great atmosphere and a cosy set-up with views you could gaze at for days. Dorms from £20/pn. For B&B, try Tigh Uisdean ( www. achiltibuiebedandbreakfast.co.uk) just down the way. From £30/pn.

WHERE TO EAT

For great-value breakfast baps, coffee, cake and homecooking, pop into the café at the

Piping School (01854 622777). For supper served straight from the sea, book (and you will need to book) into Salt (01854 622380, www.saltseafood.com), a seafood chalet where the menu includes Achiltibuie hand-dived scallops, lobster mac ’n cheese and the traditional fish soup, Cullen Skink. And there’s also the Summer Isles

Hotel ( www.summerisleshotel. com), with restaurant and bar.
