Gor blimey, what a place

What an excellent article – The Chamber of Secrets: Malham Cove & Gordale Scar ( CW May)! I first completed this walk almost sixty years ago as a 14-year-old schoolboy guided by an inspirational teacher, Derek Mills, who some years later worked for BBC Radio Blackburn and made regular contributions to their Country Matters output.

The walk at that time had none of the luxuries such as the step staircase alongside the Cove nor the numerous paved areas to mitigate ever increasing footfall. It was considered quite routine to climb the side of the lower waterfall in Gordale Scar, as Hannah did, to reach the ‘upper chamber’. What has certainly not changed is the sheer immensity of the scenery – shock and awe at every turn!

On our most recent visit with my granddaughter, Phoebe, we made the detour mentioned to gain access to the upper chamber with its ear-splitting roar from the waterfall.

Always keen to establish good habits, completion of the walk was marked with an excellent meal at The Lister Arms. Thank you for an excellent magazine. Long may you inspire us! Jim Sanderson, Hapton, Lancashire
