A pi­o­neer tree (quick to ex­ploit new areas), this one has been with us since the last ice age. It is eas­ily shaded out by larger trees, hence its need to keep mov­ing. The bark be­comes sur­pris­ingly un­sil­ver with age, de­vel­op­ing deep, char­ac­ter­ful grooves.
