Crowning the little village green in Elterwater village, ‘the Brit’ is Lakeland royalty. Built 500 years ago as a farmhouse, it became an inn in the he 19th century and served the local quarrymen and nd workers from the nearby gunpowder factory which closed in 1929. Current owners Andrew and Anna Parker live on-site and nd pride themselves on offering an authentica­lly warm Cumbrian welcome. The Good Pub Guide says: “Much-loved inn surrounded by wonderful walks and scenery, with up to seven real ales and well-liked food.” On the menu: Mackerel, salmon and trout fishcakes with garlic mayonnaise, grilled haggis with plum jam, Cumberland sausage and mash with onion gravy, chicken, ham and leek pie, wild and button mushroom stroganoff.
