Crown­ing the lit­tle vil­lage green in El­ter­wa­ter vil­lage, ‘the Brit’ is Lake­land roy­alty. Built 500 years ago as a farm­house, it be­came an inn in the he 19th cen­tury and served the lo­cal quar­ry­men and nd work­ers from the nearby gun­pow­der fac­tory which closed in 1929. Cur­rent own­ers An­drew and Anna Parker live on-site and nd pride them­selves on of­fer­ing an au­then­ti­cally warm Cum­brian wel­come. The Good Pub Guide says: “Much-loved inn sur­rounded by won­der­ful walks and scenery, with up to seven real ales and well-liked food.” On the menu: Mack­erel, salmon and trout fish­cakes with gar­lic may­on­naise, grilled hag­gis with plum jam, Cum­ber­land sausage and mash with onion gravy, chicken, ham and leek pie, wild and but­ton mush­room stroganoff.
