WHERE TO STAY & EAT
Billing itself as more Steptoe than Selfridge’s, Whitby’s La Rosa Hotel (01947 606981, www. larosa.co.uk) is a gorgeous, quirky place to stay in what was once Lewis Carroll’s Yorkshire home. Each room has an individual theme like the gothic Stoker and the cowgirl Saloon, and breakfast is delivered to your door in a hamper. Doubles from £86. Downstairs is Café La Rosa – aka the Madhatter’s Tearoom – for afternoon tea (Fri-Sun only in winter), or for a fish and chip supper head down the hill to the famous Magpie Café (01947 602058, www.magpiecafe.co.uk).
