What does it do?

Viewranger led the way in innovative smartphone apps and online platforms for tracking and navigation. Before spending a penny on a subscription there’s a lot you can do with it for free, like plotting, sharing and following routes, recording tracks (even on standby) and perusing the route stats – all using open source mapping. Going premium gets you Ordnance Survey maps (Landranger and Explorer), plus 3D aerial flyovers, the ability to identify peaks with the Skyline Augmented Reality function and perhaps most usefully, unlimited offline maps.

Ease of use

Viewranger does so much, it takes time to find your way around the menus. After that, the interface is relatively simple to use. The route plotting tool allows you to mark out a route precisely, but it can be a slow, fiddly process.
