In the 16th and 17th centuries, the ‘skates’ consisted of animal bones strapped to the sole of a shoe. By Victorian times, these had evolved into the ‘Fen Runner’: dedicated shoes or boots with steel blades, set into a wooden sole that was screwed to the heel, with small spikes at the toe for braking and turning.
