GETTING THERE

‘The Fens’ is an amorphous term covering an area fringed by Huntingdon, Ely, Downham Market, Spalding, Market Deeping and Peterborough. A walk along the drains of any of the myriad villages in this area will give you a pretty definitive Fenland experience, but the heartland of the fen skating phenomenon was Welney, between Chatteris and Downham Market. It’s now a WWT reserve; details at www.wwt.org.uk/welney

WHERE TO STAY

Ely and Wisbech make good bases for exploring the Fens. In Ely, the Lamb Hotel (0345 608 6040, www.greenekinginns.co.uk) has doubles from £87.50. In Wisbech, the Rose and Crown (01945 589 800, www.theroseandcrownhotel.com) has doubles from £79.

WHERE TO EAT/DRINK

Highlights around the Fens include the Dog in A Doublet pub, north of Whittlesey (01733 202256, www.doginad.co.uk), the Old Copper Kettle Café in Crowland (01733 211863), the Prince Albert in Ely (01353 663494) and the Lamb and Flag in Welney (01354 610242, www.lambandflagwelney.co.uk).
