Miles walked this month: 94 At this time of year, on a few occasions, I get up an hour before dawn and walk into the day. I like to be out when the frost is freshest, ice unbroken or snow unblemished. I see long shadows form and shorten, colour poured into the day, illuminating frosted patterns before destroying them. You’d probably think I’d have my camera with me, but you’d be wrong. Photography gets me to many wonderful places, but it can also stop me really being in the moment. So on these winter sorties I travel light, committing everything to memory, ensuring the moment will remain forever in my mind’s eye. I head home only when the sun has pulled itself free of the horizon by at least one sun’s width, for a feast of fresh coffee and hot porridge.
