For the truly independent walker who wants to rely on their own research and experience to get around. With the right guidebooks and preparation, plus plenty of experience of UK walking and a smattering of language skills, there is no reason why you shouldn’t go for it. You’re not compelled to go as fast or as slow as anyone else, and if you feel like it, you can change plans entirely.

PROS: Greater freedom to plan, walk or improvise; freedom to tailor the price to your precise budget.

CONS: No support network; costs can mount up (hire cars, local transport); accommodation standards can be unpredictable; good navigation skills needed.
