Set 850 feet above sea-level, slap-bang in the middle of the national park, Hawes is England’s highest market town and a perfect Yorkshire Dales base camp. It’s the home of Wensleydale cheese with a factory on the edge of town you have to visit, plus a lively Tuesday market selling all sorts of local treasures. The pubs are great, the bookshops are even better, and if you’re looking for a good local walk check out the Hardraw Force and Cotter Force waterfalls.
