Country Walking Magazine (UK)

WALK LOCAL, DREAM FURTHER.

Even in lockdown, walking is the greatest force for good…

-

AT THE MOMENT, we could probably start all 27 of our monthly route-cards with the words ‘out the door, turn L’ or ‘out the door, turn R’ – adding under ‘Refreshments’ that your kitchen does a really great cup of tea.

We’ve all recalibrated our sense of scale in the past year. Instead of favourite forests, summits or beaches, we now have favourite trees, fields or parks. But in doing that, we’ve Done the Right Thing. We’ve helped to reduce the pressure on the NHS by staying as fit and healthy as possible. We’ve eased the emotional and mental burden we all face by offsetting the daily dose of gloomy news with fresh air and a reminder that beauty is wherever you find it. And we’ve developed a closer connection to nature, learning more about what we hear and see on the doorstep, and treasuring it in a way that will last long after the C-word becomes a history lesson.

And best of all, we haven’t stopped dreaming of the horizon. This magazine is packed with beautiful places and big ideas, not all of which are in reach as you read this. But one day, hopefully soon, they will be.

So make plans. Dream big. Imagine yourself on Worm’s Head, Ladhar Bheinn or Stanage Edge and know you’ll get there at some point.

Email a pub, tearoom or B&B mentioned in our pages and tell them you’ll be there as soon as poss.

And then head out to that favourite tree again. Because right now, it – and you – are helping to save the world.

‘We’ve recalibrated our sense of scale. Instead of favourite forests, summits and beaches, we now have favourite trees, fields and parks.’
