According to the official Peak District website, the Peak’s name comes not from peak as in mountain, but from a local Anglo-Saxon tribe called the

Pecsaetan. But then we hit a bit of a logic loop because Pecsaetan means ‘peakdwelle­rs’ – people who dwelt in the peaks. So it probably does mean peak as in mountain after all.
