WALK HERE
It’s 6½ miles from Kinloch Hourn to Barrisdale Bay (find your free route guide at lfto.com/ bonusroutes), then another couple of miles on a stalker’s path to Coire Dhorrcail. Out and back is very tough in a day, so we’d suggest staying a night or two at Barrisdale Bay (see below). Climbing Ladhar Bheinn is a tough expedition that will fill a full day from Barrisdale: find a route guide from our sister magazine, Trail, at the link above, plus a 7-mile walk at Dunbar.
GETTING HERE
Kinloch Hourn is at the end of a 22-mile dead-end road, where you’ll find an honesty box car park (overnight permitted). No public transport, but Great Glen Travel (01809 501222, greatglentravel. com) will taxi you there from Invergarry for around £45. Ferries run from Mallaig to Inverie on the other side of the peninsula (westernislescruises.co.uk), from where it’s an eight-mile walk up over Mam Barrisdale to the bay.
WHERE TO STAY
You can camp or stay in the bothy (both £3pn) at Barrisdale Bay or there’s self-catering accommodation at The Stables or The White House (barrisdaleestate. com). In Kinloch Hourn, Lochhournhead (01397 313186, lochhournhead.co.uk) offers B&B (doubles from £95pn) and a cottage too, and there are a few options over in Inverie too.
WHERE TO EAT
Nothing at Barrisdale so bring your own, but you can book for dinner (and packed lunches) at Lochhournhead, where there’s also a tearoom serving cake and bacon sandwiches. In Inverie,
The Old Forge is renowned as the remotest pub in Britain (01687 462267, theoldforge.co.uk) and does a good line in seafood.
